The use of cannabis has been associated with several mental health side effects, and potential exacerbation of existing mental health conditions. While many individuals experience a temporary state of euphoria and relaxation, some are prone to negative side effects such as anxiety, paranoia, and panic attacks. Frequent and heavy cannabis use has been linked to an increased risk of developing mental health disorders or a worsening of already existing mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, and psychosis. Over the years it’s been said that cannabis use is less dangerous than other substances such as alcohol, however studies have shown that this is not true for everyone. In some people, cannabis use can affect mood, causing paranoia and suicidal ideation. High potency and frequent daily use has contributed to the increased risk of cannabis related emergency room visits and mental health disorders in the United States.
It is crucial to raise more awareness on all of the many side effects of cannabis use, build stronger research teams to study the statistics, and to educate the youth of the risks that it can have on their health as young individuals. With adolescent cannabis use being a public health concern, we must help the young people to make healthy life style choices that will benefit them, their families and their futures.
