Behavioral Health Equity Best Practices for African Americans

On monday, February 5th, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA), Office of Behavioral Health Equity, held the Behavioral Health Equity Best Practices for African Americans. SAMHSA’s Division of Children and School Mental, Mental Health Promotion Branch, Suicide Prevention Branch, and the 988 & Behavioral Health Crisis Coordinating Office were a part of this collaboration webinar. Quality health care and resources to quality health care are a basic human right to all, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or geographical location. Participants learned how collaborations to strengthen best practices can push forward health equity in African American and underserved communities.

    • The African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence is a national Center funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The academic home is the National Center for Primary Care, Morehouse School of Medicine. The African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence is taking a highly collaborative public health approach toward cultural and practical transformation of Behavioral health systems; Intervention, Treatment, and Recovery support practices; Training and support for the professional and non-professional workforce; and, the systems of education, training, and technical assistance.

  • Partnership for Child Health
    • The Partnership for Child Health (the Partnership) advocates for and develop and implement training, direct services, programs and systems of care to improve the child health outcomes and priorities of our community. It has done so by leveraging and coalescing regional and national knowledge, experience and resources, collaborating with the State, participating with and learning from national professional organizations, aggressively pursuing philanthropic and competitive grant dollars and engaging with board members who lead child health advancement in the region.

    • The purpose of this program is to assist high-risk youth and families and promote resilience and equity in communities that have recently faced civil unrest through implementation of evidence-based violence prevention, and community youth engagement programs, as well as linkages to trauma-informed behavioral health services.
  • 988 Partner Toolkit
    • The 988 Partner Toolkit is a resource center for social media, video, print, radio, FAQs, messaging, and other marketing materials that can be used to promote the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Partners can use or adapt these outreach materials and build upon them with their community coalitions to meet the needs of their specific audiences. Some products, such as videos with no music, are designed to be customizable for what partners may need for various platforms.
  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline)
    • A national network of local crisis centers offering 24/7 free and confidential support to individuals experiencing suicide or mental health crises.
  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health (HBCU-CFE)
    • A SAMHSA-funded program that recruits students to behavioral health careers, offers training, and prepares them for advanced degrees in the field to address mental and substance use disorders.
