Are Some Ways of Using Cannabis Safer Than Others?

Cannabis products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) pose health risks regardless of consumption method due to THC’s impairing effects on memory, attention, decision-making, and risk-taking. Each method of use carries distinct health and safety risks, and current scientific evidence does not confirm the safety of one method over another. For example, smoking cannabis can expose users and bystanders to harmful chemicals. Oils and concentrates used in vaping and dabbing often have high THC levels and may contain additives or contaminants, with potential effects including a higher risk of cannabis use disorder. Additionally, vaping has been linked to lung injury.

Marijuana and E-cigarette, or Vaping Use-Associated with Lung Injury (EVALI)

In 2019, a national outbreak of lung injury associated with vaping occurred. Data from patient reports and product testing showed tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-containing vaping products that also contained vitamin E acetate were linked to most cases. This outbreak resulted in over 2,800 emergency department visits and 68 confirmed deaths.
