Healthy Coping Skills for Uncomfortable Emotions

Dealing with tough emotions can be overwhelming, but learning how to navigate them is key to maintaining your mental health. Life’s challenges often bring stress, anxiety, or sadness, but by recognizing these feelings and using healthy coping strategies—like mindfulness, talking to someone, or taking breaks—you can regain control. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and taking the time to care for your emotional well-being helps you build resilience, manage stress, and face life’s ups and downs with strength and clarity.

Here are some examples of healthy coping skills:

  • Establishing and maintaining boundaries
  • Practicing relaxation strategies such as deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness
  • Getting regular physical activity
  • Making to-do lists and setting goals

The two primary types of coping strategies are problem-based and emotion-based. Knowing the difference between them can help you choose the most effective approach for your situation.

  • Problem-based coping is helpful when you need to change your situation, perhaps by removing a stressful thing from your life. For example, if you’re in an unhealthy relationship, your anxiety and sadness might be best resolved by ending the relationship (as opposed to soothing your emotions).
  • Emotion-based coping is helpful when you need to take care of your feelings when you either don’t want to change your situation or when circumstances are out of your control. For example, if you are grieving the loss of a loved one, it’d be important to take care of your feelings in a healthy way (since you can’t change the circumstance).

By understanding the difference between problem-based and emotion-based coping, you can choose the best strategy to manage challenges in your life. Remember to listen to your emotions and prioritize your mental health—seeking support when needed is a sign of strength. Taking care of yourself emotionally is just as important as handling the problems you face, and there are resources available to help you through it all.
