Cigars

Cigar smoke contains the same toxic, cancer-causing compounds as cigarette smoke, making it dangerous for both smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke. Cigars deliver nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can hinder brain development and make quitting tobacco difficult. Even people who claim not to inhale cigar smoke are still exposed to harmful chemicals, including those linked to cancer.

Health effects of using cigars

The following are some of the health risks of smoking cigars:

· Cigar smoking can cause lung cancer.
· Regularly smoking cigars can increase the risk of cancers of the throat and mouth. These include cancers of the esophagus, larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), and oral cavity (lip, tongue, mouth).
· Cigar smoking can increase the risk of gum disease and tooth loss.
· Heavy cigar smoking and inhaling cigar smoke deeply may increase the risk of developing coronary heart disease.
· Heavy cigar smoking increases the risk for lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).1 Researchers estimate that 9,000 premature deaths per year are attributable to regular cigar smoking. Researchers also estimate cigar-attributable annual health care expenditures to be $1.8 billion annually.

Inhaling or simply being around cigar smoke exposes both smokers and nonsmokers to toxic, cancer-causing chemicals and the addictive effects of nicotine. These risks highlight the importance of reducing tobacco use and protecting ourselves and others from harmful secondhand smoke. Choosing healthier habits and fostering smoke-free environments can make a significant difference in safeguarding our well-being and that of those around us.

远离香烟 (Yuǎnlí xiāngyān) – Stay away from cigarettes.

**Flavored tobacco products often mask the harshness of tobacco, making it easier for youth to start and continue using them.**
